In a landmark move set to redefine Mumbai's relationship with the Arabian Sea, the Union government has greenlit an ambitious Rs 887-crore project to develop a world-class marina at the historic Princes Dock. This initiative promises to finally unlock the city's vast but under-accessed coastline for its residents and visitors, adding a vibrant new chapter to its maritime identity.
A New Gateway to the Sea for Mumbaikars
For generations, the average Mumbaikar's interaction with the city's extensive waterfront has been largely observational. The new marina, approved by the Centre, is designed to change that dynamic fundamentally. It will be a public-access facility, transforming the harbourfront into a hub for leisure and water-based activities. The project directly supports the national vision for coastal tourism and aims to significantly strengthen India's burgeoning Blue Economy.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, hailed the project as a "turning point" for Mumbai. He emphasized that it would catalyze private investment while giving a substantial boost to maritime tourism in the financial capital.
Scale, Infrastructure, and Public Amenities
The scale of the proposed marina is unprecedented for Mumbai. It will feature berthing facilities for over 400 yachts, with each berth capable of accommodating vessels up to 30 metres in length. This infrastructure is expected to attract both domestic boating enthusiasts and international sailing visitors.
Beyond just being a parking spot for luxury boats, the project is conceived as a holistic public space. The plans include:
- Establishing sailing schools and training facilities to promote nautical skills.
- Developing open waterfront areas for public recreation and engagement.
- Building essential support infrastructure like a breakwater, parking areas, and connecting roads for seamless accessibility.
The marina will sprawl across nearly 12 hectares of water area at Princes Dock, making it a dominant feature on the eastern seafront.
Funding, Jobs, and Project Timeline
The project will be executed through a hybrid funding model. The Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) will invest approximately Rs 470 crore in developing the marine infrastructure. A private operator, to be selected through a bidding process, will invest the remaining Rs 417 crore in onshore development. This includes constructing leisure spaces, parking lots, and various support services.
A significant direct benefit of the marina will be employment generation. The project is estimated to create more than 2,000 jobs across multiple sectors. These opportunities will span construction, ongoing operations, hospitality, and specialized marine services, aiding in skill development related to boating and waterfront management.
The tender process is already underway. Bids for the project close on December 29, 2025. Once completed, a dedicated agency will be appointed to manage the marina's daily operations, ensuring professional upkeep and service delivery.
This Rs 887-crore marina marks a decisive shift from Mumbai's port-centric maritime history to a future focused on public access, tourism, and leisure.
