The ambitious ₹487 crore redevelopment project at Nagpur Railway Station is progressing at a remarkable pace, with officials confirming that approximately 60% of the work has been completed. This transformative initiative, scheduled for completion by December 2026, promises to significantly enhance passenger experience at one of Central Railway's key hubs.
Major Construction Milestones Achieved
Construction work has seen substantial progress on multiple fronts. Two major buildings on the East side - one G+2 structure and another G+5 building - have reached advanced stages of completion, with only finishing work remaining. Simultaneously, a G+7 building in the DRM office premises stands ready, marking significant progress in the station's infrastructure upgrade.
A senior railway official revealed to TOI that while construction of the buildings on Platform number 8 side is complete, finishing touches including flooring, windows, doors, escalators, lifts, and air conditioning systems are currently underway. The official emphasized that the work on the 108-meter elevated concourse is also progressing steadily as part of the comprehensive redevelopment plan.
Enhanced Passenger Capacity and Facilities
The redevelopment project aims to address the growing passenger traffic at Nagpur station, which currently serves approximately 77,000 passengers daily. Post-redevelopment, the station's capacity is expected to expand significantly to accommodate around one lakh passengers per day, effectively eliminating major congestion issues that have long plagued travelers.
Significant progress has been made on supporting infrastructure as well. The basements of both buildings on the East Side are complete, and a circulating area for pick-up and drop-off on the West Side has been finished along with its basement. To address potential flooding concerns, officials have implemented pump and sump arrangements in the basement areas.
Integrated Connectivity and Extended Timeline
One of the standout features of the redeveloped station will be its seamless integration with Nagpur's metro network. Work on the walkway connecting the railway station with the metro is currently in progress, enabling future passengers to move directly between the two transit systems without exiting the premises.
The project, which commenced in December 2022, also includes repair work, interior refurbishment, and architectural lighting of the heritage building. While initially targeted for completion within 2025, the deadline was extended by one year due to the complexity of the site and efforts to minimize passenger inconvenience during construction.
Additional facilities planned as part of the upgrade include basement parking on both sides for cars and two-wheelers, large underground water tanks, designated pick-up and drop-off points, and three-lane access roads designed to handle increased vehicle traffic more efficiently.
The redevelopment work is being implemented by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) with supervision from the Nagpur Division of Central Railway, ensuring that the project maintains high standards of quality and functionality while transforming one of central India's most important railway junctions.
