The prices of petrol and diesel have been increased by Rs 3 per litre across the country, effective from 6 am on May 15, 2026. This is the first major revision in fuel prices in recent months, impacting millions of vehicle owners and commuters.
Revised Prices in Metro Cities
In the national capital Delhi, petrol now costs Rs 106.97 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 94.65 per litre. In Mumbai, petrol is retailing at Rs 112.54 per litre, and diesel at Rs 98.23 per litre. Kolkata residents will pay Rs 108.51 for petrol and Rs 95.84 for diesel. In Chennai, petrol is priced at Rs 109.85 per litre, and diesel at Rs 97.46 per litre.
Reason Behind the Hike
The increase in fuel prices is attributed to the rise in global crude oil prices and the depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar. Oil marketing companies revise the rates daily based on the international benchmark and currency exchange rates.
Impact on Common Man
The hike is expected to increase the transportation costs, which may lead to a rise in prices of essential commodities. Commuters using private vehicles will also feel the pinch as their monthly fuel expenses go up.
