A joint team from the Ponda Municipal Council and the Goa State Urban Development Agency conducted an inspection of a site near Palika Bazaar on Friday. This inspection was undertaken as part of the council's plan to reconstruct the current bazaar, which will necessitate the relocation of 187 vendors to a temporary location.
Relocation Plan for Vendors
Council Chief Officer Bhimnath Khorjuvekar stated that the vendors will be shifted to a temporary site until the construction and commissioning of the new building are completed. The Ponda Municipal Council had vacated the dilapidated fish market building about a year ago and now intends to integrate the fish market area into the new Palika Bazaar project.
Construction and Timeline
Khorjuvekar explained that the new building will be constructed by the Goa State Urban Development Agency, which has also been tasked with demolishing the old fish market structure. The council plans to lease a private property for two years to accommodate the relocated vendors, as the new bazaar is expected to be completed within 18 months.
The existing Palika Bazaar currently operates from an open shed with a roof made of asbestos cement (AC) sheets. In contrast, the new structure will be a multi-storeyed building, offering improved facilities for vendors and shoppers alike.
