In a significant update for Goa's infrastructure, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has announced a clear timeline for the completion of the much-anticipated six-lane Porvorim elevated corridor. The project is now slated for inauguration on December 19, 2026.
Review Meeting Sets Concrete Deadlines
The announcement came after a high-level review meeting chaired by CM Sawant at the state secretariat on Thursday. The meeting was attended by Tourism Minister and local Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, along with several senior government officials. The primary focus was to assess the ongoing construction and expedite the work to meet the new deadlines.
Sawant provided a detailed breakdown of the schedule. He stated that the main construction of the elevated road is expected to be finished by October 2026. This will be followed by load testing, which is planned for completion by the end of November 2026. This rigorous testing phase is crucial to ensure the structure's safety and durability before it is opened to the public.
Traffic Management and Road Restoration Plans
A major part of the discussions revolved around managing traffic during the final stages of construction. The Chief Minister outlined a specific traffic diversion plan to minimize public inconvenience while allowing work to proceed unhindered.
Heavy vehicles traveling towards Margao and those coming into Panaji will be diverted from the Karaswada junction. Furthermore, to ease congestion, heavy traffic from the Porvorim side will only be permitted after 10 PM. These measures are designed to maintain smooth traffic flow on alternative routes.
Recognizing the wear and tear on existing roads due to diversions and construction activity, CM Sawant issued a directive for immediate repair work. He instructed officials to complete the repair and restoration of all affected service lanes within one week.
Ensuring Timely Completion and Public Cooperation
To keep the project on track, the Chief Minister has decided to hold regular review meetings. These sessions will allow for close monitoring of progress and help in quickly resolving any bottlenecks that may arise.
Sawant also took the opportunity to acknowledge the patience shown by Goans. "I thank the people for their patience and support, and seek their continued cooperation as we work towards the speedy completion of this project, which forms an important part of Goa’s highway network," he said. The elevated corridor is a critical piece of infrastructure aimed at decongesting the busy NH-66 stretch and improving connectivity between North and South Goa.
With the deadlines now firmly in place, all agencies involved have a clear roadmap to follow, bringing Goa one step closer to a major upgrade in its road transportation system.
