In a significant move to decongest its roads, Mohali witnessed the launch of a major traffic infrastructure project worth Rs 17.71 crore on Tuesday. Local MLA Kulwant Singh inaugurated the initiative, which focuses on constructing new and upgrading existing chowks and T-junctions across the city.
Project Scope and Key Locations
The ambitious plan is a part of the Punjab government's broader strategy for the holistic development of Mohali. Work commenced immediately at the site of a proposed chowk in front of Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan in Sohana, following a traditional Ardas ceremony. The entire project has been given a deadline for completion by October 2026.
Under the detailed blueprint, a brand new chowk will be established at Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan. Additionally, fresh junctions will be developed at Sector 78/79 and near the CP-67 Mall. The project also encompasses the upgrade of several existing traffic nodes that currently face congestion. These include:
- The IISER T-point on Airport Road (where 90% of the work is reportedly already done)
- Cheema Boiler Chowk
- The Quark City junction
Community Requests and Broader Development Plans
During the launch event, the gurdwara management committee put forward a request to name the upcoming chowk after Amar Shaheed Jathedar Baba Hanuman Singh. MLA Kulwant Singh assured the gathering that he would take this proposal to the state government for consideration.
Highlighting the ongoing efforts, Singh stated that five chowks have already been constructed in various parts of Mohali. He expressed confidence that the new works would significantly ease traffic bottlenecks and foster better road discipline. The execution responsibility for the project lies with GMADA (Greater Mohali Area Development Authority), which has been instructed to carry out the work while causing minimal inconvenience to daily commuters.
Additional Announcements and Clarifications
Beyond the traffic project, the MLA made other important announcements relevant to Mohali's development. He revealed that the foundation stone for a women's hostel in Sector 66 would be laid soon. Furthermore, he assured residents that stalled development projects would be expedited following the recent expansion of the Mohali Municipal Corporation limits.
Addressing the ongoing anti-encroachment drive in the region, Kulwant Singh provided a clarification. He emphasized that the action is being taken strictly in accordance with court directions and cautioned against any attempts to politicize the issue.
