In a landmark decision aimed at transforming regional connectivity, the Central Government has unveiled a colossal railway infrastructure package for Telangana. The plan, with a financial outlay of Rs 35,045 crore, encompasses the sanctioning of 20 major projects. This strategic investment is set to redefine rail travel and freight movement across the state through extensive new lines and capacity enhancement works.
Breaking Down the Mega Rail Plan
The sanctioned portfolio includes six new railway lines and fourteen doubling works, collectively spanning a massive 2,165 kilometres. The primary objectives are to decongest existing routes, significantly boost network capacity, and slash travel times. This development is poised to act as a catalyst for economic activity, linking industrial corridors, agricultural hubs, and urban centres more efficiently.
Financial commitments are already underway. A total expenditure of Rs 11,549 crore has been incurred on various ongoing projects in the state. Notably, a segment of this expansion is already operational, with 547 kilometres of rail lines commissioned. These completed stretches are currently easing traffic and improving service reliability in their respective regions.
Focus on New Connectivity and Capacity Augmentation
A dedicated investment of Rs 4,611 crore is channeled towards the construction of new railway lines. These routes are designed to bridge connectivity gaps, opening up underserved areas and creating shorter travel corridors for both passengers and goods. Furthermore, the state's network has already been strengthened by the addition of 774 kilometres of new tracks in recent times.
To tackle congestion on busy trunk routes, doubling and multi-tracking projects worth Rs 6,939 crore are in progress. These critical upgrades will allow for higher train frequency, improve punctuality, and enhance overall safety, catering to the growing passenger and freight demand.
Land Acquisition and Implementation Timeline
The successful execution of such an expansive plan hinges on land acquisition. For the entire suite of projects, authorities require 2,343 hectares of land. The process is advancing steadily, with 1,580 hectares already acquired. The remaining 764 hectares is yet to be secured, and its timely acquisition is crucial for maintaining the construction schedule and ensuring these transformative projects are delivered without delay.
