In a significant move to address accommodation challenges for government officials, Assam's Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah inaugurated a new residential complex project in Dibrugarh on Wednesday. The foundation stone laying ceremony marks the beginning of construction for a 12-apartment complex specifically designed for state employees.
Project Details and Financial Investment
The ambitious housing project, being developed under the 'Rental Housing Scheme for Government Officers and Employees' by the Assam State Housing Board, comes with an estimated budget of approximately Rs 4.5 crore. Located in Dibrugarh's East Milan Nagar area, the complex represents the state government's commitment to improving infrastructure and living conditions for its administrative workforce.
During the ceremony, Minister Mallabaruah emphasized the growing need for such housing solutions, stating, "With the CM's secretariat already in Dibrugarh and the Assam assembly complex set to come up soon, there will be a need for additional housing for government officers and employees."
Strategic Importance for Dibrugarh's Development
The minister highlighted Dibrugarh's evolving role in the state's administrative framework, noting that Dibrugarh has been projected as the second capital of Assam, after Guwahati. This residential complex forms part of broader efforts to decentralize administrative functions across the state and strengthen Dibrugarh's infrastructure to support its enhanced status.
"The project will provide an effective solution to the housing problems for government employees and officers," Mallabaruah assured, adding that "this development was an important matter for Dibrugarh" given its strategic position in Assam's governance structure.
Political Support and Attendees
The foundation stone ceremony saw participation from several key figures who have been instrumental in pushing for Dibrugarh's development. State Power Minister and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, known for his advocacy of infrastructural development in the city, graced the occasion with his presence.
The event also featured Pulok Gohain, Chairman of the State Housing Board, and Vice-Chairman Subhash Dutta, demonstrating the coordinated effort between different government bodies. Mayor Saikat Patra also attended the ceremony, underscoring the project's significance for local urban development.
This housing initiative is expected to significantly ease accommodation challenges faced by government officials transferred to Dibrugarh and support the broader administrative decentralization efforts currently underway in Assam. The project represents a concrete step toward fulfilling the vision of developing Dibrugarh as a complementary administrative hub to Guwahati, potentially reducing pressure on the state's primary capital while promoting balanced regional development.
