Trichy is on the verge of a major upgrade to its inter-city transport infrastructure, with a new, dedicated private bus terminus nearing completion. The facility, being constructed at Panjapur, was inspected by Mayor Mu Anbalagan on Wednesday, who expressed confidence in its timely inauguration.
Inspection Reveals Advanced Stage of Construction
During his site visit, Mayor Mu Anbalagan reviewed the progress of the ambitious project, which carries a price tag of Rs 17.6 crore. He confirmed that approximately 85% of the construction work has been successfully finished. Based on the current pace, the Mayor indicated that the terminus could be ready for public use in about a month, potentially aligning with the Pongal festival in 2026.
The civil work for the essential bus bays and passenger shelters is already complete. Workers are now actively engaged in laying the flooring for the platforms and the approach roads that will feed into the facility.
Design and Capacity of the Panjapur Terminus
Strategically located on 4 acres of land adjacent to the Panjapur KKBT on the bustling Trichy–Madurai National Highway, this terminus is specifically designed to cater to private long-distance bus operators. It will primarily serve routes to major metropolitan hubs like Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
Furthermore, buses originating from key southern districts such as Madurai, Nagercoil, and Tirunelveli will also have scheduled halts at this new terminus. The design includes:
- Two spacious platforms with a total of 58 bus bays.
- A covered area of 30,849 square feet for the bays and shelters.
- Approximately 1.4 lakh square feet of operational space within the terminus complex.
- Specially designed bays to accommodate multi-axle buses, allowing them to dock comfortably under shelter.
Addressing a Long-Standing Need
The launch of this dedicated terminus will resolve a significant logistical issue for Trichy's commuting public. Currently, over 100 long-distance private buses plying routes to Chennai and Bengaluru operate without a centralized terminus. Passengers are forced to use multiple, scattered points for boarding and alighting, including:
- Panjapur KKBT
- Central Bus Stand
- Chathiram Bus Stand
- Samayapuram Toll Plaza
The new Panjapur terminus aims to consolidate these operations, bringing order, convenience, and improved amenities for the thousands of passengers who rely on these services daily. It represents a critical step in modernizing Trichy's transportation network and enhancing connectivity with other major Indian cities.
