Trichy's First Exclusive Private Bus Terminus Nears Completion, Set for Dec Launch
Trichy's New Private Bus Terminus to Open in December

The city of Tiruchirappalli is on the cusp of a significant upgrade to its public transport infrastructure. The Tiruchirappalli City Corporation has initiated the final phase of construction for what will be the city's first dedicated private bus terminus. Located in Panjapur, near the existing integrated bus terminus, this new facility is designed exclusively to manage private long-distance bus services.

A Modern Hub for Inter-City Travel

Mayor Mu Anbalagan recently inspected the progress of the new terminus, which has been developed at a cost of ₹17.6 crore. During his visit, he announced that authorities are working towards commissioning the facility around December 23. The terminus is strategically positioned to streamline operations for private buses heading to major metropolitan destinations like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

The infrastructure is impressive in its scale and planning. Built on a four-acre plot, the terminus features two platforms with a total of 58 bays to accommodate buses. Furthermore, the project includes the completion of access roads and other areas spanning 1.4 lakh square feet, specifically engineered to handle large multi-axle buses. Once operational, this new hub will consolidate services that currently depart from various points across the city, including the Central and Chathiram bus stands.

Enhanced Passenger Amenities and Flood Prevention

Mayor Anbalagan emphasized that the development would extend beyond just bus operations. "Gradually, shops will be opened to cater to the needs of passengers," he stated, indicating a focus on passenger convenience. This move is expected to transform the terminus into a comprehensive travel node.

In a related development aimed at civic improvement, the Mayor also inspected a newly constructed stormwater drain in Ward 62. This drain, built at a cost of ₹50 lakh, runs for 300 meters parallel to the Trichy-Madurai National Highway. Its primary function is to divert rainwater and prevent stagnation in the residential areas of Ramachandra Nagar and E Pudur.

The completed section is part of a larger 1.5-kilometer project designed to channel excess water into the Koraiyar river. Approximately 1.2 kilometers of this drain remains to be built. "Work for the other portion of the stormwater drain will be launched soon. We examined the efficiency of the new drain at completed areas. It will prevent inundation," Mayor Anbalagan added, highlighting the corporation's proactive approach to urban flooding.

What This Means for Trichy

The upcoming inauguration of the Panjapur private bus terminus marks a pivotal step in decongesting the city's core and organizing its inter-city transport network. By creating a dedicated space for private operators, the corporation aims to reduce traffic chaos and improve the travel experience for thousands of daily passengers. Concurrently, the stormwater drain project addresses critical infrastructure needs, showcasing a dual focus on enhancing both connectivity and urban resilience for the residents of Trichy.
