The Tiruchirappalli City Corporation has taken a significant step towards decongesting a crucial highway by approving a major infrastructure project. The civic body has sanctioned a substantial sum of Rs 6.2 crore for the construction of a new satellite bus terminus. This facility will be located near the Trichy-Thanjavur National Highway at Thiruverumbur.
Project Timeline and Land Acquisition
In a move to expedite the process, the corporation has already floated a tender to identify a suitable contractor. The aim is to begin construction work before the enforcement of the model code of conduct for the upcoming assembly elections next year. For the project, the corporation has acquired approximately one acre of land on the campus of the old Thiruverumbur panchayat union office. A payment of Rs 2.5 crore has already been made to the district administration for this land.
Features and Strategic Importance
This new terminus will be the fifth bus terminus in Trichy city and the second satellite facility after the one in Srirangam. The project is designed to include the development of dedicated bus bays and a commercial complex. Currently, buses operating on the Trichy-Thanjavur-Thiruverumbur route pick up and drop passengers from bays on the narrow service roads of the National Highway. This lack of a dedicated terminus contributes to severe traffic congestion and makes the highway, which connects the delta districts, prone to accidents.
An official highlighted the expected benefits, stating, "Once the terminus is ready, a substantial area will be freed up for vehicles on the highway. Some of the mofussil buses will be operated through the terminus." The new terminus is strategically planned to serve the five new wards of Trichy corporation and the numerous villages surrounding Thiruverumbur.
Impact on Daily Commute and Traffic Flow
The project addresses a critical need, as about 500 daily bus services operate between Trichy (Panjapur KKBT) and Thanjavur-Velankanni via the Thiruverumbur route. By moving bus operations off the main highway service lanes and into a organized terminus, the corporation aims to enhance road safety, reduce travel time, and create a more systematic public transport hub for the growing region. This initiative is seen as a vital upgrade to the city's transportation infrastructure, aiming to bring relief to thousands of daily commuters and long-distance travelers alike.
