Varanasi is poised for a significant infrastructure leap, with two landmark projects targeting readiness for public inauguration by April 2026. The ambitious developments include an international cricket stadium at Ganjari and the nation's pioneering ropeway-based urban transport system.
March-End Deadline Set for Key Projects
After a comprehensive review of the ongoing work, Divisional Commissioner S Rajalingam confirmed that the final deadline for the completion of both ventures has been fixed for the end of March 2026. This timeline paves the way for their anticipated inauguration the following month.
The Commissioner recently conducted an inspection of the under-construction international cricket stadium at Ganjari to assess the pace of progress. Officials informed him that approximately 75% of the project work is already complete. While a prolonged monsoon season caused some delays, construction has since resumed at an accelerated speed to meet the new target.
Roadwork for Enhanced Connectivity
To ensure seamless access to the new cricket stadium, the Commissioner also reviewed the progress on widening and strengthening crucial connecting roads. These include the Harsos-Suichak-Gangapur road and the Rohaniya-Gangapur road.
Regarding the Harsos-Suichak-Gangapur road, Executive Engineer Ashutosh Kumar Singh from PWD's Construction Division-1 provided an update. He mentioned that the work was in progress when the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) proposed an alternative parking site. This new plan would allow for the road to be constructed uniformly as a two-lane thoroughfare. The PWD has also been directed to expedite the completion of the Rohaniya-Gangapur road.
Ropeway Project Gains Momentum
The other flagship project, India's first urban transport ropeway, is also seeing rapid advancement. Commissioner Rajalingam stated that work on constructing the final station at Godowlia and the technical station at Girjaghar crossing is continuing at a fast pace.
Similar to the stadium, the ropeway project has a March-end completion deadline. This schedule is crucial to allow for the full-length trial run of the ropeway system in April 2026, before it is officially opened for public use.
The simultaneous push on these two major infrastructure initiatives underscores a significant phase of development for Kashi, aiming to boost both tourism and local mobility.
