A year after the tragic Air India plane crash on June 12, 2025, the families of the victims are still waiting for answers regarding the cause of the disaster. Key investigation reports from the government-appointed committee and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) have yet to be submitted, according to sources in the Gujarat home department.
Government Investigation Delayed
The Union government established a high-level committee on June 13, 2025, to probe the crash. Headed by the Union home secretary, the committee was tasked with examining the causes of the accident, reviewing existing safety protocols, assessing the emergency response, and recommending measures to prevent future tragedies. The committee was given a three-month deadline to submit its findings, but the report remains pending.
Additionally, the AAIB was assigned an inquiry into the crash. However, highly placed sources in the state home department confirmed that neither the AAIB nor the Centre has filed its report so far.
Police Completed Their Part
Gujarat DGP G S Malik, who served as the city police commissioner at the time of the accident and was a member of the high-level committee, stated that the police had completed their portion of the investigation. “Our police have submitted our findings about the case and regarding the rescue operations. The Union home secretary would know better about the report,” he told TOI.
Attempts to reach Union home secretary Govind Mohan for comment were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered.
Families Express Anguish
For the families of the victims, the prolonged wait has been agonizing. Vishvesh Babu, who works for a private firm in the UK, lost his 47-year-old brother, Manish Babu, in the crash. “We should know what happened that day. Every time, we hear that no report has come and it is still in process,” he said. “Authorities should ensure no such tragedy takes place in the future, and that is possible only with the findings of the crash investigation.”
The delay has left many families in a state of uncertainty, seeking closure and accountability. The crash, which claimed numerous lives, remains a painful memory for those affected, and the lack of official findings has only deepened their grief.
Ongoing Impact
The absence of a final report has also raised concerns about aviation safety. Experts emphasize that thorough investigations are critical to identifying systemic issues and implementing corrective measures. Without the report, airlines and regulators may lack crucial insights to prevent similar incidents.
As the one-year anniversary passes, the families continue to hope for transparency and timely action from the authorities. The government has yet to announce a revised timeline for the submission of the report.
