Nagpur Hosts Viksit Bharat Startup Conclave with Diverse Innovations
The Viksit Bharat Startup Conclave kicked off at Nagpur University campus on Friday, showcasing a remarkable array of entrepreneurial ideas from across India and beyond. The event, organized by the Vidarbha Economic Development Council (VED), startup mentoring firm Lemon Ideas, and Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), drew at least 50 startups, including ventures by school students, highlighting the vibrant spirit of innovation in the region.
Investment Opportunities and Startup Stages
Deepak Menaria, director of Lemon Ideas, revealed that around 20 of the participating startups are actively seeking investments, with the total amount sought ranging between Rs 6 crore and Rs 8 crore. This underscores the growing maturity and scalability of these ventures, as they move from ideation to implementation phases.
Notable Startup Pitches and Innovations
The conclave featured a diverse mix of startups addressing unique challenges and opportunities:
- War-Time Tourism from Dubai: Alen Alexander of Join Habibi, a Dubai-based travel firm, shared insights into their vacation packages for Gulf countries, including desert safaris. Surprisingly, they continue to receive inquiries even during wartime, demonstrating resilience in the tourism sector. The company plans to expand to other GCC countries and North Africa soon.
- GPS-Embedded Life Jackets for Safety: Taeja Dadi from Pudimadaka fishing village near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, presented a patented life jacket with a tracking system. Designed to address drowning deaths among fisherfolk, this innovation can locate individuals in the sea and alert rescue teams. Dadi's startup, Alert 24, is seeking Rs 2 crore in investment and aims to serve not only fishermen but also oil rig workers and seafarers.
- Eco-Friendly Detergent Sheets from Africa: A startup from Africa introduced detergent sheets made from eco-friendly materials, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional detergent powders, as highlighted by Menaria.
- Affordable Apparel for Women from Bhopal: Another startup from Bhopal is focusing on providing affordable clothing options for women, catering to a growing market demand.
- Additional Ideas: Other pitches included concepts like phone charger dispensers for public places and recycling caffeine from leftover coffee cups, showcasing the breadth of creativity among participants.
Broader Impact and Vision
Rina Sinha, president of VED, emphasized the conclave's role in empowering youth as job creators, aligning with the Viksit Bharat goal of achieving developed nation status by 2047. By fostering entrepreneurship, such events contribute to economic growth and innovation-driven development.
The first day of the conclave set a promising tone, with startups spanning sectors from tourism and safety to sustainability and consumer goods.
