Gurgaon's Kherki Daula Service Road Crisis: Two Months of Neglect
Daily commuters and residents of nearby sectors in Gurgaon are facing significant challenges while traveling on the service road of the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway near the Kherki Daula toll plaza. A damaged stretch has remained unrepaired for over two months, creating hazardous conditions and disrupting daily routines.
Severe Road Damage and Safety Hazards
A critical section of the service road opposite the Hyatt Regency Hotel, near the Sector 76-77 junction, has completely lost its top asphalt layer. This has exposed loose gravel and stones, creating dangerous driving conditions. The situation has been exacerbated by frequent movement of heavy vehicles including trucks and dumpers, which further deteriorate the road surface.
Broken patches along the roadway have significantly increased dust pollution in the surrounding area, affecting both visibility and air quality. During peak traffic hours, vehicles must slow down considerably while navigating the uneven surface, leading to persistent congestion and longer commute times.
Commuters Voice Their Concerns
Regular users of this route report that the loose stones and rough patches substantially increase the risk of skidding and potential damage to vehicles. Dhirendra Singh, a resident of Mapsko Mount Ville who uses this road daily, expressed serious safety concerns: "Potholes have made driving extremely unsafe. Moreover, frequent water discharge from tankers into a nearby storm drain causes waterlogging at that spot, which further damages the road."
Krishan Pratap Singh from Palm Hills added: "The service road was resurfaced before the monsoon last year and later repaired in November, but has remained damaged for the past two months. Heavy truck movement has further deteriorated the surface and caused congestion at the Sector 76-77 junction."
Additional Problem Areas
The U-turn for vehicles approaching from the Jaipur side near the toll plaza is also in poor condition. The surface there remains rough and uneven, forcing motorists to make careful maneuvers to avoid damaged sections. Jersey barriers at this location are reportedly not properly placed, adding to the safety concerns.
Motorists traveling further ahead encounter similar problems at the Rampura Chowk junction. The damaged road surface has transformed this junction into an accident-prone area, with loose stones particularly increasing skidding risks for two-wheelers.
Questionable Repair History
The service road was reportedly resurfaced in November ahead of the Urban Mobility India conference. However, according to multiple commuters, the quality of this work was substandard, with the asphalt layer beginning to peel off within days of completion.
Official Responses and Road Safety Concerns
A senior official at NHAI's project implementing unit in Rewari stated: "The agency will take up repairs of the service road soon." However, another NHAI official offered no clear assurance regarding repairs at the U-turn near the Kherki Daula toll plaza, which falls under the PIU Dwarka jurisdiction.
This official maintained that, according to established norms, there should not be a U-turn at this location as it presents a road safety hazard. "Multi-axle vehicles taking the turn exert additional pressure, accelerating damage," the official explained, highlighting the structural challenges of maintaining this section of roadway.
The ongoing neglect of this critical infrastructure continues to impact thousands of daily commuters while raising serious questions about maintenance protocols and road safety standards in one of Gurgaon's busiest transportation corridors.
