Western Railway Cancels 120 Mumbai Local Trains on Jan 12-13 for Sixth Line Work
120 Mumbai Local Trains Cancelled Jan 12-13 for Rail Work

Commuters on Mumbai's Western Railway line are set to face significant disruption at the start of the new working week. The railway administration has announced the cancellation of a substantial number of suburban train services on two consecutive days to facilitate critical infrastructure upgrades.

Major Cancellations Announced for Peak Days

At least 120 suburban train services will be cancelled on both Monday, January 12, and Tuesday, January 13, 2026. This decision impacts one of the busiest rail corridors in the city, directly affecting thousands of daily passengers during peak hours. According to officials, the cancellations are evenly split, with 60 services on the Up line and 60 on the Down line being scrapped on each of the two days.

These large-scale cancellations are not an isolated event. They form a crucial part of a longer, pre-planned 30-day block period that commenced on the night of December 20-21, 2025, and is scheduled to run until January 18, 2026. The entire exercise is aimed at accelerating the construction of the much-anticipated sixth railway line between Kandivali and Borivali stations.

Night Blocks and Critical Infrastructure Work

The immediate cause of the January cancellations is a series of major night blocks planned for the preceding nights. Specific engineering works require complete suspension of traffic on key tracks during the early morning hours.

On the night of January 11-12, a block will be in place for dismantling Point No. 104 on the car shed line at Kandivali. During this period:

  • The Up Fast Line will be blocked from 11.15 pm to 3.15 am.
  • The Down Fast Line will be blocked from 1 am to 4.30 am.

An identical block is scheduled for the following night of January 12-13 to continue the work at Kandivali, affecting train movement between Kandivali and Malad.

Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, explained the necessity of the disruption. "These major blocks are essential for carrying out critical track and signalling works related to the construction of the sixth line between Kandivali and Borivali," he said. "The works involve dismantling existing points and connecting new crossovers, which are necessary for long-term capacity enhancement and smoother suburban operations."

Long-Term Goal Amidst Short-Term Pain

The extended 30-day block period has been undertaken to facilitate multiple stages of civil, track, and signalling works connected to the sixth line project. This ambitious infrastructure project is designed to increase line capacity and ease the severe congestion on this heavily saturated suburban corridor, which is a lifeline for Mumbai's western suburbs.

Officials noted that operations are further constrained by the concurrent suspension of the fifth line and the imposition of speed restrictions in the affected section. This combination of factors has made the cancellation of a significant number of services unavoidable to maintain safety and allow engineers to work.

The railway administration has urged passengers to take note of the schedule changes and plan their journeys in advance. While the cancellations on January 12 and 13 will cause inconvenience, the authorities emphasize that this short-term disruption is a necessary step towards achieving a more robust and efficient rail network for millions of commuters in the future.
