Haryana Farmers Mobilize in Widespread Tractor Protests Against Proposed India-US Trade Agreement
Farmers across Haryana organized large-scale tractor marches in nearly all tehsils on Tuesday, staging a peaceful and symbolic demonstration against the proposed India–US trade deal. The protests, described as a complete success by participants, saw hundreds of farmers driving their tractors from villages to tehsil headquarters, particularly in Kurukshetra and Yamunanagar districts.
Farmers Voice Grave Concerns Over Trade Deal Impact
The protest was held on the call of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Charuni. Farmer leaders articulated deep concerns that if the trade deal is implemented, the most severe impact will fall on India's small and marginal farmers. They argued that these farmers cannot compete with their counterparts in countries like the United States, where agricultural operations often span thousands of acres and benefit from advanced technological resources and economies of scale.
According to the farm leaders, such unequal competition could severely destabilize India's entire agricultural ecosystem. This includes not just farmers but also mandis (agricultural markets), numerous agro-based industries, and the livelihoods of millions of people directly or indirectly dependent on farming. They issued a stark warning that the agreement, if implemented without robust safeguards for farmers' interests, could precipitate a serious and lasting crisis for rural economies across the nation.
Unity and Determination Mark the Protests
The farmers described the tractor march as a powerful display of unity. They stated that the strong and widespread participation reflected a consolidated stance among the farming community across Haryana. Emphasizing their resolve, farmers declared they are determined to stand together to protect their rights and safeguard the country's agricultural system from perceived external threats.
A key demand raised during the protest was for the Central Government to immediately cancel the proposed India–US trade deal. The farmers insisted that the government must prioritize the interests of farmers and the general public in any trade negotiations.
Announcement of Future Agitation Plans
Meanwhile, farmer organizations announced plans for escalated action if their concerns remain unaddressed. They revealed that a major strategy for the next phase of their agitation will be decided at the "Kisan–Mazdoor Jan Kranti Rally". This significant gathering is scheduled to be held on March 23 at the Grain Market in Pipli, Kurukshetra, potentially setting the course for further demonstrations.
The protests underscore the growing anxiety within India's agricultural sector regarding international trade agreements and their potential to reshape domestic farming landscapes, highlighting a critical juncture for policy-makers.
