India-US Trade Deal Moving Towards Closure: Piyush Goyal

India-US Trade Deal Progressing Toward Finalization

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has announced that the highly anticipated trade agreement between India and the United States is steadily moving towards closure. In a recent statement to Hindustan Times, Goyal emphasized the constructive nature of ongoing discussions, describing the prospective arrangement as both positive and a good deal for both nations.

Negotiations Advance Despite Challenges

Trade talks between New Delhi and Washington have been actively progressing since early last year, though they encountered a significant hurdle in August when US President Donald Trump imposed a substantial 50% tariff on Indian imports. Despite this obstacle, negotiations have continued with renewed momentum. Goyal clarified that the process does not operate under strict deadlines, stating, We are actively engaged. We never do any deal with a deadline in mind.

The Commerce Minister expressed confidence that major issues have been resolved, noting, I don’t think there are any sticky issues left to be resolved. We can now look at moving towards closure. He assured that an official announcement will be made once both parties are fully satisfied with the terms.

Presidential Optimism and Strategic Partnership

During the Davos gathering on January 21, President Trump voiced strong optimism regarding the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a close friend and an esteemed statesman, stating, I have great respect for your Prime Minister. He's a fantastic man and a friend of mine, and we are going to have a good deal. These remarks were delivered at the World Economic Forum's 56th Annual Meeting, highlighting the personal rapport between the two leaders.

The BTA, formally outlined in February following high-level mandates from both governments, aims to dramatically increase mutual trade. The current bilateral trade volume of $191 billion is targeted to reach $500 billion by 2030, reflecting the ambitious scope of the agreement. These negotiations were initially introduced during Prime Minister Modi's visit to Washington in February 2025.

Broader Trade Context and Diplomatic Support

Concurrently, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer commended the recently concluded India-EU commercial treaty, suggesting that India secured highly favorable terms. Regarding other trade pacts, Goyal remarked on the UK and EU agreements, saying, The UK one was a fantastic deal. This EU FTA is also equally good. He emphasized that each trade deal is unique, depending on economic conditions and national interests.

On January 12, Sergio Gor, the US envoy to India, underscored the strategic importance of the relationship, noting that no country possesses more strategic value to Washington than India. Gor highlighted the collaborative efforts to finalize a major trade accord, stating, Real friends can disagree but always resolve their differences in the end, referencing the strong personal bond between Modi and Trump.

Gor acknowledged the complexities involved, adding, India is the world's largest nation. So it's not an easy task to get this across the finish line, but we are determined to get there. Beyond trade, he emphasized ongoing cooperation in critical areas such as security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and health.

The collective statements from key officials indicate a shared commitment to overcoming remaining challenges and achieving a mutually beneficial trade agreement that will strengthen economic ties and foster long-term partnership between India and the United States.
