Maharashtra Tops NITI Aayog Export Index 2024

Maharashtra has secured the top position in NITI Aayog's fourth Export Preparedness Index for 2024. The government think tank released its comprehensive report on Wednesday, revealing the state's strong performance in export readiness.

Top Performers in the Export Rankings

Tamil Nadu follows closely behind Maharashtra in second place. Gujarat claims the third position in the national rankings. Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Punjab complete the list of leading states.

These rankings reflect each state's preparedness across multiple dimensions. The assessment considers export potential, policy support mechanisms and actual performance outcomes.

Smaller States and Union Territories Show Promise

Among smaller states and Union Territories, Uttarakhand leads the pack. Jammu and Kashmir secures second position in this category. Nagaland follows in third place.

Other notable performers include Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu. Goa and Tripura also feature prominently in the rankings for smaller regions.

Government Perspective on Export Growth

NITI Aayog CEO B V R Subrahmanyam emphasized the importance of strong domestic foundations. He made these comments while releasing the latest export index report.

"As India expands its network of Free Trade Agreements and Economic Partnership Agreements, the role of strong domestic foundations becomes increasingly critical," Subrahmanyam stated.

He elaborated on what this means for individual states. "For states, this means fostering ecosystems that can respond to new opportunities, align with global standards, and build competitiveness across districts."

States Adopt Proactive Export Strategies

Subrahmanyam noted significant developments in state-level export planning. "In recent years, several states have begun strengthening their export vision through dedicated policies, institutions and infrastructure," he observed.

This represents a clear shift toward more structured approaches to exports. States are becoming increasingly proactive in their export promotion efforts.

Exports Drive Economic Development

Exports serve as a crucial engine for economic growth across India. They play multiple important roles in national development.

These include strengthening participation in Global Value Chains. Exports also help earn valuable foreign exchange for the country. Additionally, they enhance India's global competitiveness in international markets.

For India, currently the world's fastest-growing major economy, exports hold particular significance. They contribute to improving economic resilience against global shocks.

Exports help reduce persistent trade deficits. They also promote more inclusive growth patterns across different regions of the country.

Methodology Behind the Export Index

The Export Preparedness Index 2024 follows a consistent, data-driven methodology. It assesses states across several important parameters.

These parameters include export policies and business environment factors. Infrastructure quality receives significant weight in the assessment. Actual export outcomes form another crucial component of the evaluation.

The data comes from both state and central government agencies. Each indicator receives appropriate weighting based on its relative importance. This ensures a balanced and comprehensive assessment of export preparedness.
