Elon Musk's Boring Company Secures Major Dubai Underground Highway Project

In a landmark development for urban transportation, Dubai has partnered with Elon Musk's The Boring Company to construct a revolutionary underground highway system. The ambitious Dubai Loop project, with an estimated cost of AED 2 billion (approximately ₹5,000 crore), promises to dramatically reshape mobility across the emirate.

Project Overview and Leadership Review

On Wednesday, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, personally reviewed the Dubai Loop project plans. This initiative is designed to transform the Middle East's mobility ecosystem by providing advanced first-and-last-mile connectivity solutions that integrate seamlessly with existing public transport networks.

The strategic partnership agreement was formalized during the sidelines of the World Governments Summit 2026 between Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the US-based Boring Company. According to official statements, both entities will now collaborate to finalize designs while initiating mobilization activities.

Technical Specifications and Implementation Timeline

The Dubai Loop represents a network of innovative underground tunnels dedicated exclusively to passenger transport. Key technical features include:

  • Total Route Length: 22.2 kilometers with 19 stations
  • Tunnel Diameter: 3.6 meters designed for vehicle transport
  • Construction Technology: Advanced tunneling methods enabling faster delivery and lower costs
  • Speed Capacity: Vehicles capable of traveling up to 150 mph, significantly faster than conventional subway systems

The implementation will occur in distinct phases:

  1. Pilot Phase (6.4 km): Connecting Dubai International Financial Centre with Dubai Mall through four stations, with an estimated cost of AED 565 million and completion within one year after design finalization
  2. Full Implementation: Extending to the complete 22.2 km route, projected to take approximately three years total

Transformative Impact on Regional Mobility

According to RTA studies, the Dubai Loop demonstrates exceptional efficiency in both capacity and operating costs. The pilot phase alone is expected to serve nearly 13,000 passengers daily, while the completed system will accommodate approximately 30,000 passengers per day.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized the project's significance: "This represents a qualitative addition to Dubai's transport ecosystem, enhancing integration between different mobility modes while providing flexible and efficient first- and last-mile solutions. The agreement supports efforts to cement Dubai's position among world-leading cities in deploying future mobility solutions."

Innovative Transportation Concept

The Boring Company describes the Loop as an express public transportation system that functions more like an underground highway than a traditional subway. Unlike conventional systems where trains stop at every station, Loop vehicles transport passengers directly to their destinations without intermediate stops, dramatically reducing travel times.

This innovative approach offers multiple advantages:

  • Minimal disruption to existing roads and utility services
  • Lower construction costs compared to conventional transport systems
  • Enhanced traffic flow in high-density urban areas
  • Direct point-to-point travel eliminating unnecessary stops

The initial phase will establish crucial connections between the Dubai World Trade Centre and the financial district with Business Bay, setting the foundation for broader network expansion. This infrastructure project aligns with Dubai's rapid urban and economic growth objectives while contributing to enhanced quality of life for residents and visitors through improved mobility solutions.
