Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spotlighted the traditional crochet lace industry from Narasapuram in Andhra Pradesh's West Godavari district, calling it a brilliant model of the 'Vocal for Local' movement. During his monthly 'Mann Ki Baat' address, the PM emphasized how this intricate craft is driving economic self-reliance for countless women across the state.
Narasapuram Lace: A Global Heritage Empowering Women
Prime Minister Modi expressed his delight at the international acclaim received by Narasapuram lace products. He noted that the recent award of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag has provided a significant boost to the industry. This recognition, he said, has revitalized the local lace craft, which is preserved by generations of women artisans.
Over 250 villages in Andhra Pradesh are involved in this craft, with lakhs of rural women achieving financial independence. These artisans create more than 500 varieties of products that are now exported to markets around the world. "This effort in Narasapuram has brought new life to the local lace craft, empowering numerous women and serving as a vehicle for economic progress," PM Modi stated, connecting traditional art with societal empowerment.
AI Skill Hub Inaugurated to Fuel Rural Development
In a related development aimed at boosting rural opportunities, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the Cyient AI & Future Skills Hub at Digital Bhavan in Pedamainavarilanka village, Narasapuram mandal. The minister, along with public representatives and officials, later watched the Prime Minister's 'Mann Ki Baat' broadcast live.
This state-of-the-art facility is designed to enhance rural employment by providing AI-based training to youth, women, farmers, and self-help groups. Sitharaman described the hub, established under the Cyient Foundation, as a pioneering model for AI-driven rural skill development. She said it aligns perfectly with national missions like Digital India, Skill India, and the vision for Viksit Bharat 2047.
The hub is equipped with several advanced resources to facilitate effective learning:
- Smart classrooms and a computer lab with 40 systems.
- Drone training equipment and high-speed internet.
- Access to modern AI tools and software.
- Structured programs in digital literacy, e-commerce, and agriculture/aquaculture technology using drones.
The courses emphasize practical learning, with 60% of the curriculum dedicated to hands-on training. Successful participants receive certification and placement support to bridge the gap between skilling and employment.
Foundations for a Digital and Skilled Future
During the event, Dr. BVR Mohan Reddy, founder chairman of Cyient, highlighted the foundation's broader efforts. These include digitalising over 120 schools and providing training to 35,000 students in the region, laying a strong foundation for tech adoption.
Union Minister Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma and District Collector Chadalawada Nagarani were also present at the inauguration. Finance Minister Sitharaman praised Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partnerships for playing a crucial role in supporting such inclusive growth initiatives that merge traditional strengths with futuristic technology.
The dual focus on celebrating a heritage craft like Narasapuram lace and launching a cutting-edge AI training center underscores a comprehensive development approach. It aims to honor and scale traditional livelihoods while simultaneously preparing rural communities for the opportunities of the digital economy.
