India's aviation landscape welcomed a major new player on Christmas Day, as the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) officially commenced commercial operations. The long-awaited greenfield airport marked its historic opening on December 25, 2025, with a ceremonial water cannon salute greeting the first arriving flight.
A Grand Inauguration with Sky-High Celebrations
The launch festivities began on the eve of the big day with a breathtaking drone show. A fleet of 1,515 drones illuminated the night sky above the new airport, creating coordinated formations that included lotus blooms, the airport's logo, and themes celebrating India's growing prowess in aviation. This spectacular display set the stage for the operational debut.
The first commercial aircraft to touch down at the new hub was an IndiGo flight, 6E460, arriving from Bengaluru. In a traditional aviation honour, the aircraft was welcomed with a water cannon salute as it taxied to its stand. Shortly after, the airport handled its first departure, another IndiGo service bound for Hyderabad.
Boosting Connectivity with Multiple Airlines
The airport opened its runways to scheduled services from several major Indian carriers. On its inaugural day, passengers could fly with IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air, and Star Air. Approximately 30 domestic flights were scheduled to operate, establishing NMIA as a functioning hub from day one.
This commencement is a significant milestone for Maharashtra's infrastructure and economic development. As India's newest major greenfield airport, it is poised to substantially ease congestion at the existing Mumbai airport and enhance air connectivity for the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
