Trichy Railway Division Launches Container Traffic from Peralam, Eyes Rs 41.2 Lakh Revenue
New container traffic from Peralam boosts Trichy rail freight

The Trichy railway division has taken a significant step to bolster its freight operations by launching a new container traffic service from Peralam in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvarur district. The inaugural run, flagged off on Friday, marks the beginning of regular commercial container movement from the newly commissioned Peralam goods shed, now functioning as a container railway terminal.

Inaugural Freight and Key Participants

The maiden consignment comprised 48 containers filled with caustic soda, destined for Vedanta Limited in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. The loading operation was efficiently handled by a collaboration between Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) and AVG Logistics. The formal inauguration was conducted by Balak Ram Negi, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Trichy.

Projected Revenue and Operational Scale

This new freight stream is projected to be a substantial revenue generator for the division. Estimates suggest it will bring in approximately Rs 41.2 lakh. The operations are planned on a regular monthly basis, with an expected movement of about four rakes per month dedicated to transporting caustic soda.

Logistical Reach and Economic Impact

The container traffic will traverse a considerable distance, covering 1,357 kilometers from Peralam to Anantapur. The total tonnage for this operation is a substantial 3,336 tonnes. This initiative is set to enhance the region's freight operations by providing efficient logistics connectivity for industrial products, linking Tamil Nadu with Andhra Pradesh through rail. It strengthens the Peralam facility's role as a key container railway terminal in the division's network.

The move is seen as a strategic effort by the railways to capture a larger share of the industrial freight market, offering a reliable and cost-effective transportation alternative for bulk commodities like caustic soda.
