Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, chaired a high-level review meeting on Wednesday to assess the progress of India's Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and outline a comprehensive export strategy. The meeting, attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce and other key departments, focused on accelerating negotiations with major trading partners and addressing bottlenecks in export sectors.
FTA Progress Under Scrutiny
The review covered ongoing FTA negotiations with nations such as the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Canada. Officials presented updates on tariff reduction commitments, market access issues, and rules of origin. Goyal emphasized the need for swift conclusion of these agreements to enhance India's global trade footprint. He directed teams to resolve outstanding issues and ensure that FTAs are mutually beneficial, particularly for Indian small and medium enterprises.
Export Strategy for Growth
In addition to FTAs, the minister discussed strategies to boost exports in key sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and agricultural products. The plan includes diversifying export markets, reducing logistics costs, and leveraging digital platforms for trade facilitation. Goyal stressed the importance of aligning with global supply chains and promoting Indian brands internationally. He also called for better coordination between states and the central government to remove export barriers.
The meeting comes at a time when India's exports have shown resilience despite global economic uncertainties. Data from the Ministry of Commerce indicates that merchandise exports grew by 6% in the last quarter, driven by engineering goods and chemicals. However, challenges persist due to geopolitical tensions and fluctuating commodity prices. Goyal urged officials to work on contingency plans to mitigate risks and maintain export momentum.
Focus on Trade Facilitation
The minister also reviewed the implementation of the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) and the National Single Window System (NSWS). He directed customs authorities to expedite clearances and reduce transaction costs for exporters. The NSWS, which integrates 26 government agencies, has already reduced the number of documents required for exports by 30%. Goyal called for further digitization to achieve a seamless export process.
Way Forward
Concluding the meeting, Piyush Goyal instructed officials to prepare a roadmap for the next quarter, with specific targets for each FTA and export sector. He emphasized that India must aim for a $2 trillion export target by 2030, requiring sustained efforts in trade policy and infrastructure. The minister also highlighted the role of state governments in promoting exports and urged them to set up export facilitation cells.
The review underscores the government's commitment to boosting India's trade competitiveness and integrating the economy with global markets. With several FTAs in the pipeline, India is poised to strengthen its position as a key player in international trade.
