In a massive pre-festival boost for travelers, Indian Railways is gearing up to operate over 1,700 special trains to accommodate the massive passenger rush expected during the Diwali and Chhath Puja season. This strategic move aims to prevent congestion and ensure smooth travel during one of the busiest periods for the national transporter.
Northern Railway Takes the Lead in Festival Operations
The Northern Railway zone emerges as the frontrunner in this festival special initiative, with plans to operate more than 540 additional trains. This significant allocation reflects the zone's crucial role in connecting major pilgrimage sites and handling the traditional holiday migration patterns in North India.
Zone-Wise Distribution of Special Trains
According to railway officials, the special train distribution across major zones reveals a strategic approach to managing regional demand:
- Northern Railway: 540+ trains
- North Western Railway: 336 trains
- Western Railway: 219 trains
- Eastern Railway: 156 trains
- South Central Railway: 104 trains
- South Eastern Railway: 93 trains
Strategic Focus on High-Demand Routes
The railway ministry has conducted extensive analysis of passenger traffic patterns from previous years to identify routes requiring additional capacity. The special trains will primarily connect major urban centers with rural and semi-urban destinations where traditional holiday travel peaks occur.
"Our focus is on ensuring that every passenger reaches their destination comfortably during these important festivals," stated a senior railway official familiar with the planning.
Enhanced Passenger Amenities and Safety Measures
Along with the increased number of trains, Railways has announced enhanced security arrangements and additional booking counters at major stations. The special trains will include both sleeper and general coaches to cater to different passenger segments.
Travelers are advised to book their tickets in advance through the IRCTC website or mobile application to avoid last-minute disappointments. The railway administration has also deployed additional staff at reservation centers to handle the expected surge in booking requests.
