Major Railway Infrastructure Boost for Western India
The Union Cabinet has given its official approval for two significant railway expansion projects totaling Rs 2,781 crore that will substantially improve rail connectivity in Gujarat and Maharashtra. The decision, announced on Wednesday, represents a crucial step in Indian Railways' ongoing mission to upgrade infrastructure on routes experiencing heavy passenger traffic and freight movement.
Dwarka-Kanalus Rail Line Doubling Project
One of the approved projects involves the doubling of the 141-kilometer Dwarka-Kanalus rail line in Gujarat with a substantial investment of Rs 1,457 crore. This expansion is strategically important for both religious tourism and commercial transportation in the region.
The enhanced rail connectivity will significantly benefit pilgrims traveling to the renowned Dwarkadhish temple, one of India's most important pilgrimage sites. Additionally, the project will facilitate smoother transportation of essential commodities including coal, salt, containers, and cement throughout the region.
According to official projections, the doubled railway line is expected to boost the transportation of edible salt with an estimated additional freight traffic of 11 million tons per annum. The infrastructure development will include the construction of 7 major bridges and 143 minor bridges along the route connecting Okha, a coastal town in Dwarka, with Kanalus railway station in Jamnagar district.
Badlapur-Karjat Third and Fourth Line Expansion
The second approved project focuses on constructing third and fourth railway lines along the 32-kilometer Badlapur-Karjat section in the Mumbai metropolitan region with a total expenditure of Rs 1,324 crore. Notably, the Maharashtra state government will contribute 50 percent of the project cost, demonstrating a collaborative approach to infrastructure development.
This expansion forms a critical component of the 88-kilometer Kalyan-Lonavala section and serves as a vital link within Mumbai's extensive suburban railway network. The line passes through Thane and Raigad districts in Maharashtra and will substantially improve commuter connectivity between Pune and Mumbai.
The upgraded infrastructure is projected to increase freight movement by 7.2 million tonnes annually, providing significant economic benefits to the region. The project will feature 8 major bridges and 106 minor bridges along its route, which forms part of the crucial 1,238-kilometer Mumbai-Chennai corridor via Pune-Solapur-Guntakal-Arrakonam.
