The airport authorities have submitted a detailed project report to the Airports Authority of India proposing to extend the existing runway from 8,136 feet to an impressive 12,500 feet. This substantial extension will enable the airport to handle wide-body aircraft, which currently cannot operate from Trichy due to runway length limitations. The expansion is crucial for meeting the growing passenger and cargo demands that have been steadily increasing over recent years.
Massive Investment and Land Acquisition
The comprehensive expansion project comes with an estimated cost of ₹350 crore, with ₹220 crore specifically allocated for the runway extension and an additional ₹130 crore for supporting infrastructure development. To facilitate this expansion, nearly 500 acres of land have already been acquired through collaborative efforts between the AAI and the Tamil Nadu government, though approximately 12.5 acres still need to be secured to complete the project area.

- Passenger Boarding Bridges: Five new passenger boarding bridges will be installed, bringing the total to ten PBBs. This places Trichy Airport alongside Chennai and Kolkata airports in AAI's network with this level of boarding bridge capacity.
- Modern Facilities: The airport has already implemented runway guard lights costing ₹32 lakh to support low-visibility operations. Additional upgrades include new canopies, baggage trolleys, and Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the terminal.
Enhanced Passenger Amenities and Commercial Development

Master concessions for retail outlets and food and beverage services are planned, with awards expected by March and June 2026.
