In a significant step towards revolutionizing overnight train journeys in India, the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) has officially concluded the comprehensive trial run of the second Vande Bharat Sleeper train rake. This milestone paves the way for the eventual introduction of this semi-high-speed sleeper service on long-distance routes across the country.
Rigorous Testing Across Multiple Zones
The extensive testing phase for the 16-coach Prototype Sleeper Rake-2 was conducted meticulously across three major railway zones. The trials commenced on the Mahoba–Khajuraho section under the North Central Railway. They then progressed to the Sawai Madhopur–Kota–Nagda stretch managed by the West Central Railway, and finally concluded on the busy Ahmedabad–Mumbai route of the Western Railway.
During these trials, the train impressively achieved a top speed of 180 kmph. The primary focus of RDSO engineers was to evaluate the train's performance under high-stress conditions. A series of critical tests were performed, including detailed Oscillation Trials to assess stability and vibration, and Emergency Braking Distance (EBD) tests at various speeds to ensure passenger safety.
What Comes Next for the Sleeper Train?
With the trial phase now successfully wrapped up, the immediate next step has been clearly outlined by railway officials. The second Vande Bharat Sleeper rake will be sent back to its manufacturer, BEML, which developed the train using Integral Coach Factory (ICF) technology.
The purpose of returning the train to BEML is to implement all the necessary corrections and adjustments that were identified during the rigorous testing process. A senior railway official confirmed this plan, stating that after these modifications are completed, the train will be directed as per the final instructions from the Railway Board. This marks the final stage of preparation before the official launch.
Transforming Long-Distance Rail Travel
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper variant is highly anticipated as it is expected to dramatically transform long-distance rail travel in India. By combining higher speeds with the comfort of sleeper berths, it aims to offer a faster and more comfortable alternative to existing overnight trains like the Rajdhani Express.
