Goa Board to Adopt New NCERT Textbooks from 2027-28 for Classes IX-XI
Goa Board to Adopt New NCERT Textbooks from 2027-28

Panaji: Following the rollout of textbooks aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) up to Class VIII, the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is now developing textbooks for Classes IX to XI. These new textbooks are expected to be released during the academic year 2027-28, and the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has already prepared a plan for their implementation.

Board's Adoption Strategy

Board chairperson Bhagirath Shetye stated that the board will adopt the new NCERT textbooks as they are for certain subjects, including English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and Hindi, during the first year of implementation.

Shetye explained that the board plans to continue using the existing history and geography textbooks, which have recently been updated with local content by the Goa Board. He said, "For 2026-27, we will continue with the same textbooks from Class IX to XII. When the new NCERT textbooks come, we can adopt them as they are in the main subjects like English, mathematics, and science. In the case of Hindi, we will see how it goes during the first year and then take a call on whether it needs to be revised as per local requirements. Once they are implemented, we will take a call on whether any local content needs to be added."

Current Textbook Status

This approach aligns with prevailing standards. The Goa Board currently implements existing NCERT textbooks for English, mathematics, science, economics, and psychology. Local textbooks are used only for subjects like accountancy and secretarial practice.

NCERT's Roadmap for NEP 2020

In March, NCERT outlined a detailed roadmap for introducing fresh school textbooks as per the NEP 2020. This process is based on the new National Curriculum Framework for School Education, 2023, which defines learning expectations for students at different levels.

For Class IX, new textbooks are currently being designed. Draft syllabi have been made available on the NCERT official website for review by teachers and other stakeholders. For Classes X and XI, revised books are planned for rollout in 2027-28.
