19-Year-Old NEET Aspirant Dies by Suicide in Rohtas District

A tragic incident unfolded in the Town police station area of Rohtas district on Friday noon, as a 19-year-old medical aspirant died by suicide in Dehri-on-Sone. This marks the second such student tragedy in the region within a mere 24-hour period, raising serious concerns about mental health pressures among youth.

Details of the Incident

The deceased, identified as Ankit Shekhar, was a dedicated NEET aspirant who had been residing in the Ghantolia locality for the past three years while preparing for the highly competitive medical entrance examination. The incident occurred at the rented house of Raman Singh, where Ankit lived with his family. His father, Amit Kumar, works as a station master at Karwandiya railway station and was in Patna at the time of the tragedy.

According to family members, Ankit’s mother, Meenakshi Verma, discovered the situation after coming out of the bathroom and finding her son’s room locked from inside. Despite repeated attempts to get a response, there was no answer. Hearing her desperate cries for help, neighbors quickly rushed to the house, broke open the door, and found the young man hanging from a ceiling fan.

Immediate Response and Investigation

Ankit was immediately taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival. Upon receiving information, Town police station in-charge Shivendra Kumar dispatched a team from the district Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to the scene. The team, led by district officer Prabhat Kumar, conducted a thorough examination of the room, recorded video evidence, and seized Ankit’s mobile phone and tablet for further analysis.

Preliminary investigations into his digital devices and personal belongings revealed that the student had been struggling with clinical depression and had been on medication for an extended period. Sub-inspector Anjali Tiwari confirmed that the body was sent to Sasaram for a post-mortem examination, while police continue to investigate the circumstances leading to this heartbreaking incident.

Broader Context and Concerns

This incident follows closely on the heels of another student suicide, where a 22-year-old law student was found hanging in her university hostel in Jamuhar just a day earlier. The back-to-back tragedies highlight the urgent need for enhanced mental health support and awareness, particularly among students facing intense academic pressures.

Authorities are urging families and educational institutions to prioritize mental well-being and provide accessible resources for those in distress. The community in Rohtas district is left in shock, mourning the loss of two young lives within such a short timeframe.
