The education department of Bihar has decided to organise a special summer learning programme for students of Class V and VI in government schools who are comparatively weak in language and mathematics. The month-long camp will run from June 1 to June 30 across villages in the state.
Objective of the Programme
The initiative aims to strengthen students’ reading, comprehension, communication and basic mathematical skills to help them prepare better for higher primary education. By focusing on foundational learning, the programme seeks to bridge the gap in core competencies among young learners.
Community-Based Approach
According to guidelines issued by primary education director Vikram Veerkar, the programme will be entirely community-based. Each camp will accommodate around 10 to 15 children. Volunteers from middle schools will be identified to conduct the camps, while Education Sevaks and Talimi Markaz personnel will also assist in the initiative.
Training for Volunteers
Selected volunteers will undergo special training conducted by district and block-level resource persons before the commencement of classes. This training will equip them with effective teaching strategies to address the specific needs of weak students.
Assessment and Teaching Methods
Using the ASER assessment tool, volunteers will identify children requiring additional academic support. They will provide focused learning sessions in language and mathematics for one to one-and-a-half hours daily. The camps will employ games, storytelling, reading exercises and creative activities to improve foundational learning skills in an engaging manner.
Implementation and Monitoring
The department has directed district and block officials to ensure effective implementation, regular monitoring and smooth functioning of the programme across the state. This oversight aims to maintain quality and consistency in all camps.
