In a landmark move, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the provisional answer key for the 2026 Civil Services (Preliminary) examination, which was conducted on May 24. This is the first time the commission has taken such a step.
Purpose of the Provisional Answer Key
The provisional key, which serves as the basis for recommending candidates to elite services such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS), enables aspirants to check their responses and estimate their scores in advance. It also allows them to challenge any potential errors in the answer key based on their understanding.
UPSC’s Commitment to Transparency
“The release of the provisional answer key reflects UPSC’s commitment to greater transparency, fairness, and integrity in the examination process while providing candidates an opportunity for informed and constructive participation,” UPSC stated in a release on Wednesday.
How to Challenge the Answer Key
Candidates who appeared for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 can submit their representations challenging the answer key until 6 PM on May 31. This must be done through the dedicated ‘Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep)’ available at upsconline.nic.in.
Representations must include the correct answer key as per the candidate’s understanding, along with a brief explanation and supporting documents from three authentic sources. All submissions will be reviewed by teams of subject experts who will meticulously examine each representation, assess the supporting documents, and record their views on the correctness of the answer key for the concerned questions.
Final Answer Key and Result
The final answer key will be released only after the declaration of the final result. This year, approximately 5.49 lakh candidates appeared for the CSE Prelims.
