Chandigarh: Haryana has initiated plans to introduce sugar industry-specific courses in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) to create a skilled workforce and enhance employment opportunities for youth in the sector. The proposal was reviewed at a meeting chaired by chief secretary Anurag Rastogi on Monday.
Discussions focused on introducing technical, vocational and diploma-level programmes aligned with the requirements of sugar mills.
Officials reviewed courses identified by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), Directorate General of Training (DGT) and other recognised institutions. The proposed programmes include agro processing, boiler attendant, sugar processing operator, sugar boiling, quality control, diploma in boiler operation, PG diploma in sugar technology and specialised courses in instrumentation and automation, productivity and maturity management, environmental science and boiler operations.

Rastogi directed the constitution of a committee under the chairmanship of principal secretary, youth empowerment and entrepreneurship, Rajeev Ranjan to finalise the modalities and submit its report within 14 days. He stressed that the curriculum should be designed in line with industry needs to ensure better employability and availability of trained manpower for sugar mills.
The meeting also explored the possibility of conducting specialised courses within sugar mill premises to provide trainees with practical exposure and industry-oriented learning.
At present, the skill development and industrial training department offers 89 trades for students after Classes VIII and X, while DGT-affiliated institutions run 169 CTS courses across the state.
