NMC Proposes Extending MBBS Course Duration to 10 Years
NMC Proposes Extending MBBS Course Duration to 10 Years

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has proposed extending the maximum duration for completing the MBBS course from nine years to ten years, according to a draft amendment to the Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023. This change would allow medical students an additional year to finish their undergraduate medical education, including the compulsory rotatory medical internship.

Key Provisions of the Draft Amendment

The draft amendment states that no student will be permitted to continue the undergraduate medical course beyond ten years from the date of joining the MBBS programme. Currently, the regulation limits the duration to nine years. However, the proposal retains another important rule: students are still barred from making more than four attempts to clear the First Professional MBBS examination, which is conducted at the end of the first academic year.

Benefits for Students

The proposed extension is expected to benefit students whose education is delayed due to academic setbacks, health issues, family circumstances, or other unforeseen reasons. Medical education experts have noted that the proposal reflects a recognition that a small section of students may require additional time to complete training because of interruptions during the course. They emphasize that while the amendment provides greater flexibility, it does not dilute academic standards since the four-attempt ceiling remains intact.

Public Consultation Process

The draft notification has been published in the Gazette of India and placed in the public domain for comments and suggestions. NMC has invited feedback from medical colleges, students, faculty members, and other stakeholders. Objections and suggestions received within 30 days will be considered before the amendment is finalized.

This change comes nearly three years after the introduction of the competency-based Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023, which had capped the duration of undergraduate medical education at nine years. The proposed amendment marks a significant shift in policy, aiming to provide more flexibility for medical students while maintaining rigorous academic standards.
