Chennai: Of the top five most preferred colleges in Tamil Nadu, four colleges are from Chennai. Presidency College came on top among 181 government colleges, with the highest number of applications so far — 32,808 applications for 2,380 seats. The other four are Government Arts College in Coimbatore, Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College, and Queen Mary's College.

Most Preferred Courses

Among government colleges, the most preferred course is BA Tamil, offered in 154 colleges. More than two lakh students preferred the course. The other two popular courses are BSc Computer Science and BCom (General). BA English, BBA, BSc Chemistry, and BA Economics also received a high number of applications this year.

Presidency College: A Top Choice

“Presidency College still is one of the best colleges to study basic science programmes such as physics, chemistry and botany, along with Loyola College. We have the best lab facilities since the British period. All faculty members hold PhDs,” said R. Raman, principal. “The college also provides hostel facilities for more than 2,000 students, which is another major attraction,” he said. The college also ensured several co-curricular activities.

Government Arts College, Nandanam

Government Arts College in Nandanam has received more than 25,000 applications this year so far for 1,430 seats. “After converting it into a co-education college two years ago, we are receiving more applications. Availability of more courses and the location are other attractions,” said D. Thangarajan, principal of Government Arts College, Nandanam.

Overall Admission Statistics

There are 1.25 lakh seats in 181 government arts and science colleges. Tamil Nadu Government Arts and Science Colleges Admissions has received 2,05,485 registrations, and 1,52,997 students have paid their fees. Of those who paid fees, 92,848 are girls and 60,086 are boys. As many as 63 transgenders have also applied. The last date to apply is May 29.

The admissions are likely to be conducted in the first week of June. Colleges would invite the candidates based on the merit list and enrol them.
