The Tambaram corporation is set to inaugurate a 'Mudhalvar Padaipagam' (study centre) in ward 56 of Perungalathur and a knowledge centre in ward 31 of Thiruneermalai by June. These facilities aim to enhance access to educational resources for students preparing for competitive examinations. Built at a total cost of ₹4.5 crore, the centres are expected to benefit at least 2,000 residents from the surrounding areas.
Study Centre Features
The multi-storey Mudhalvar Padaipagam, constructed for approximately ₹2.5 crore across 536 square metres, will include a general reading area, preparatory zone, computer zone, training centre, indoor and outdoor learning spaces, reception area, movable study areas, and bookshelves. The centre will also be equipped with CCTV surveillance, Wi-Fi connectivity, and two-wheeler parking.
Knowledge Centre Features
The knowledge centre, built at a cost of ₹2 crore over 640 square metres, will feature a reading room, special reading area, children's activity area, audio-visual room, and computer room. Additional amenities include Wi-Fi, CCTV cameras, lift access, RO drinking water facility, and parking space.
Residents' Perspectives
Vignesh, a 28-year-old resident of Thiruneermalai preparing for the UPSC exam, noted that the centres would significantly reduce his daily travel. 'For the past two years, I have been travelling nearly 40 kilometres each day to Anna Centenary Library to study,' he said. S Pallavi, a college student from West Tambaram, mentioned that she previously had to travel to Pallavaram to access a library after the old local facility became dilapidated. 'The new centres will be useful for students and residents,' she added.
Official Statement
Tambaram corporation commissioner S Balachander stated, 'There are 20 libraries and one knowledge and study centre under the corporation. Proposals are being made to build more such facilities.'
