The Odisha government has unveiled a major initiative to transform its industrial training institutes into advanced hubs for skill development. The state's Skill Development and Technical Education department announced a new scheme on Wednesday to establish Centres of Excellence within government-run ITIs.
Blueprint for Advanced Skill Hubs
Under the 'Establishment of Centres of Excellence in Govt Industrial Training Institutes' scheme, 25 out of the state's 75 government ITIs will be selected for a significant upgrade. Commissioner-cum-Secretary Bhupendra Singh Poonia stated that these CoEs will be equipped with state-of-the-art, industry-integrated laboratories, smart classrooms, and technology-enabled learning facilities.
The ambitious plan is scheduled for implementation during the 2025-26 and 2026-27 academic sessions. Each chosen ITI will receive a substantial investment of Rs 8 crore from the state government for establishing the Centre of Excellence. The Directorate of Technical Education and Training (DTET), Odisha, will be the implementing agency.
Focus on Future-Ready Trades and Ecosystem
The transformation will focus sharply on aligning training with modern industrial demands. Each selected ITI will establish one CoE in a new-age trade while also upgrading two to three existing trades based on institutional needs and modernisation priorities.
The selection of trades will be driven by regional industry demand and future labour market requirements. The CoEs will introduce cutting-edge, industry-relevant programs in areas such as:
- Automation & Robotics
- Electric Vehicle Technology
- Additive Manufacturing
- Mechatronics
- CNC Machining
- Artificial Intelligence
Beyond upgrading existing labs, the scheme mandates the creation of new laboratories in emerging sectors to meet stringent industry standards. Furthermore, students will have access to advanced add-on skill modules beyond the regular curriculum, specifically designed to enhance their employability.
Statewide Impact and Governance
The benefits of this initiative will extend across all 30 districts of Odisha, reaching every trainee enrolled in the state's ITIs. Commissioner Poonia emphasised that the CoEs will function as anchor institutes, providing not only future-ready skilling for students but also continuous faculty development.
In a move to ensure a wider impact, these centres will not be limited to their host institutions. They are designed to extend training, resources, and technical support to nearby ITIs, fostering a statewide ecosystem of excellence and industry-readiness.
To monitor the scheme's execution, the government will form a steering committee and an executive committee. This structured approach aims to ensure the successful rollout of the project, which promises to redefine vocational training standards in Odisha and create a highly skilled workforce prepared for the industries of tomorrow.
