AKTU Introduces Virtual Internship Program with Academic Credits
Students at Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) in Lucknow will soon have the opportunity to pursue virtual internships as part of their academic curriculum. Starting from the 2026-2027 academic session, this innovative initiative integrates online internships into the university's credit system, aiming to significantly enhance practical exposure for engineering students.
Credit System and Implementation Guidelines
Under the new program, students will earn one academic credit for every 30 hours of virtual internship completed. The university administration has developed comprehensive guidelines to ensure smooth implementation and maintain academic standards. These internships are specifically designed for students in computer engineering, information technology, and related engineering disciplines.
Alignment with National Education Policy 2020
According to Dean of Undergraduate Studies Professor Anurag Tripathi, this initiative directly supports the objectives of the National Education Policy 2020 by emphasizing skill-based learning and practical experience. "This program eliminates geographical barriers," Professor Tripathi explained. "Students can complete internships from anywhere without needing to travel, saving both time and valuable resources."
Academic Recognition and Career Benefits
Students who successfully complete virtual internships will receive formal recognition from their colleges along with academic credits. This program not only enhances practical skills but also substantially strengthens students' resumes for future career opportunities. The structured approach ensures that virtual internships contribute meaningfully to academic progression while building industry-relevant competencies.
Industry Partnerships and Eligibility Criteria
AKTU has established strategic partnerships with leading organizations through Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). Partners include IBM, SmartBridge, NIELIT, Infosys, Nemi, and Softpro, offering both paid and unpaid online internship opportunities to AKTU students and those from affiliated colleges.
Program Structure and Evaluation Process
AKTU Vice-Chancellor Professor J P Pandey detailed the program structure, noting that students in their third, fifth, and seventh semesters are eligible to undertake internships. A minimum requirement of 60 internship hours will translate to two academic credits. These virtual internships will be treated as mini-projects within the academic framework.
The program aligns with the National Credit Framework, which establishes that 30 hours of practical work equals one academic credit. Evaluation will be conducted jointly by industry partners and university faculty, ensuring that students receive comprehensive assessment of their practical learning experiences.
