Tragic Suicide of Bengaluru Student at GITAM University Hostel

In a heartbreaking incident, a 20-year-old computer science and engineering student at GITAM, a deemed-to-be university in Bengaluru, allegedly died by suicide on Monday afternoon. The student, identified as Nayana SV, a native of Sarjapura in Bengaluru Rural and daughter of a farmer, reportedly jumped from the 13th floor of her hostel building at Nagadenehalli, Doddaballapura.

Details of the Incident and Police Investigation

According to preliminary investigations by the police, Nayana, a second-year student, made a video on her phone apologizing to her parents before taking the extreme step. No suicide note was found with her or in her hostel room. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM when Nayana walked into the corridor and jumped into the lift duct. A CCTV camera in the corridor captured her walking towards the duct passage and jumping. Students and hostel staff heard a loud noise and rushed to the spot to find her dead.

A senior police officer stated that they are still trying to ascertain the exact reason for her actions, adding that her family members are also clueless about the motive. The university management confirmed that one lift was already in use in the hostel building, and a second lift was under construction due to the large size of the hostel and higher student strength. It was from this construction area that Nayana jumped.

Family Complaint and Legal Action

Nayana's father, Venkatesh, filed a complaint alleging that the university management failed to take adequate safety measures during the lift construction and did not prevent students from accessing the duct area. Based on this complaint, a case has been registered against the management under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 106, which pertains to causing death by negligence. The police are continuing their probe to determine if negligence played a role in the tragedy.
