Calcutta University Committee Proposes New Certificate Names for Multidisciplinary Courses
In a significant move to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Calcutta University has formed a committee to address naming issues for its multidisciplinary courses. The committee, established on Thursday, has determined new names for certificates awarded to students at various exit points in their academic journeys.
New Certificate Proposals for Three-Year and Four-Year Programs
Undergraduate students pursuing three-year multidisciplinary courses may now receive a certificate titled 'Graduation with Two Cores and One Minor'. This change comes as the previous name, 'Multidisciplinary Courses (MDC)', was not recognized under NEP 2020, potentially causing difficulties for students seeking higher studies. For those in four-year degree programs, the committee proposes certificates named 'Four-Year BA/BSc/BCom Honours' and 'Four-Year BA/BSc/BCom Honours with Research' for research degree qualifiers.
Exit Options and Certificate Names for Shorter Durations
The committee has also outlined certificate names for students exiting at earlier stages. Those leaving after one year will receive a 'One-Year Certificate Course' certificate, mentioning the subject name. Students exiting after two years will be awarded a diploma titled 'Two-Year Diploma Course', also with the subject specified. These proposals aim to provide clear academic credentials at every level.
Next Steps and Final Approval Process
All these proposals will be placed before the syndicate, the highest decision-making body at Calcutta University, for final approval. A committee member stated, "These are the proposals that will be tabled during the next Syndicate meeting for discussion, after which a final decision will be taken." The move is part of broader efforts to ensure compliance with national education standards and enhance student opportunities.
