CBSE Rolls Out Nationwide AI Curriculum for Middle School Students

In a landmark move for Indian education, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan officially launched the Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence (CT & AI) curriculum for Classes III to VIII under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on April 1. This launch coincided with the first day of the 2026–27 academic session, signaling the government's commitment to integrating AI literacy as a fundamental component of school education from an early age.

Formal Launch at Vigyan Bhawan with Key Dignitaries

The ceremonial launch took place at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, attended by senior government officials and prominent education stakeholders. Minister Pradhan was joined by Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary, who co-launched the curriculum. The event also saw the presence of Sanjay Kumar IAS, Secretary of the Department of School Education & Literacy; Dr Vineet Joshi IAS, Secretary of the Department of Higher Education; Rahul Singh IAS, Chairperson of CBSE; Dr Dinesh Prasad Saklani, Director of NCERT; and Ms Prachi Pandey, Joint Secretary (Institutions & Training), Department of School Education & Literacy.

A Structured Framework for Classroom Implementation

Developed in collaboration with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), this curriculum represents the first formal, structured introduction of AI education into the CBSE school system on a large scale. It comes equipped with comprehensive learning modules, detailed teacher handbooks, and robust student assessment frameworks designed to provide a clear, practical pathway into AI and computational thinking for students as young as those in Class III.

Minister Pradhan described this initiative as "a transformative step towards future-ready learning" that "formally introduces structured AI education into the school ecosystem at scale." He emphasized that the curriculum "ensures early and systematic exposure to emerging technologies, laying a strong foundation for the learners of tomorrow."

Dual Strategy: AI for Education and AI in Education

Pradhan outlined two guiding strategies behind this initiative: "AI for Education" and "AI in Education." He framed these as part of a broader push toward what he termed "augmented learning," stating that the curriculum marks "a decisive shift towards augmented learning — nurturing critical thinking, design orientation and a culture of innovation among young minds."

Citing the Stanford AI Knowledge Index, the Education Minister noted that India currently ranks as the third-largest country globally in terms of AI-capable population. "If we review the Stanford AI Knowledge Index today, India is the third-largest country in the world where people with AI capacity reside. This has been possible because India's academia and educational family have taken AI as their agenda. Today, we have worked to bring it into a formal structure," he explained.

Empowering Students for the Digital Future

Pradhan praised both CBSE and NCERT for "institutionalizing this forward-looking framework and advancing a more adaptive, technology-integrated education ecosystem." He asserted that the curriculum "will empower students to meaningfully engage with and shape the digital future," reflecting India's growing global standing in technology-driven computing.

The rollout from the very first day of the academic year underscores the government's intent to treat AI literacy not as an optional addition but as a core part of school education. This structured approach aims to build computational thinking skills systematically, preparing students for a world increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence and digital technologies.
