Chennai Colleges Embrace AI in Arts and Science Degrees
Arts and science colleges in Chennai are taking a bold step forward. They plan to integrate artificial intelligence into their degree programmes starting from the next academic year. This move comes after generative AI tools captured the imagination of students across the city.
Colleges Adopt Different Approaches
Different institutions are adopting varied strategies to implement this change. Some colleges plan to change course names to reflect the updated curriculum. Others intend to offer AI as additional courses for students.
Ethiraj College for Women is making significant preparations. The college plans to establish a centralized AI lab. This facility will impart AI-related skills to a large number of students.
Principal S Uma Gowrie explained their plans clearly. "We are planning to establish a new lab with AI tools and software needed for AI," she said. "This lab will be in addition to existing labs for computer science students."
The college also plans to change course nomenclature. BSc Computer Science will become BSc Computer Science with AI. BSc Visual Communication will change to BSc Visual Communication with AI.
Multiple Institutions Join the Movement
Women's Christian College is also joining this educational shift. The college plans to offer AI and robotics to all students as an add-on course starting next academic year.
Principal Lillian Jasper shared their collaborative approach. "In collaboration with our partner institutions in the US, we are planning to offer online and offline courses in AI and robotics," she stated. "These courses will be open to all students on the campus."
The college additionally plans to launch BSc Computer Science with AI from the next academic year.
Madras Christian College is taking a slightly different path. They plan to integrate computer applications with basic science courses. This includes BSc Maths and BSc Physics.
Principal Paul Wilson provided specific details. "The courses will be known as BSc Maths with Computer Science and BSc Physics with Computer Science," he explained. "About 25% to 30% of the syllabus will be computer science-related topics."
DG Vaishnav College is focusing on practical skills. They plan to introduce programming languages like Python and R to BSc Maths students. Data analytics will also become part of their curriculum.
Principal S Santhosh Baboo mentioned their physics department plans. "In physics, we are planning to integrate robotics with the curriculum," he said.
A City-Wide Educational Transformation
Chennai's educational landscape is clearly evolving. Multiple prestigious institutions are recognizing the importance of AI education. They are preparing students for a technology-driven future through these curriculum changes.
