Residents and local leaders in Belagavi North constituency are raising demands for an additional government pre-university (PU) college to address the growing educational needs of students. Currently, Belagavi city has 72 PU colleges, but only four are government-run institutions. Among these, just one—Government Sardars PU College—is located within the Belagavi North constituency.
Imbalance in Access to Government Education
The scarcity of government colleges in the area forces many students to seek admission in private institutions, which often come with higher fees. This financial burden is particularly challenging for economically weaker families. The existing government college is unable to accommodate the increasing number of applicants, leading to a pressing need for a new facility.
Community Voices
Local education activists and parents have been vocal about the disparity. They argue that the government must prioritize establishing another PU college in the northern part of the city to ensure equitable access to quality education. A petition has been submitted to the state education department, urging immediate action.
Government Response
Officials from the Department of Pre-University Education have acknowledged the demand but cited budgetary constraints as a hurdle. However, they assured that the proposal is under review and will be considered in the upcoming education budget. The department is also exploring the possibility of upgrading an existing high school to a PU college as a temporary measure.
Future Prospects
If the demand is met, it would significantly ease the pressure on Government Sardars PU College and provide more opportunities for students in the region. Educational experts believe that increased government presence in higher secondary education can improve overall literacy and skill development in the constituency.
