Guru Nanak Dev University to Digitize Nanak Singh's Literary Works for Global Access
In a significant move to preserve and promote Punjabi literary heritage, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in Amritsar has announced plans to digitize the complete literary works of the renowned novelist Nanak Singh. This initiative was unveiled during the fourth Nanak Singh Memorial Lecture held at the university's Senate Hall, organized in collaboration with the Nanak Singh Literary Foundation.
Key Announcements and Objectives
Vice-Chancellor Karamjeet Singh detailed the university's commitment to making Nanak Singh's acclaimed writings accessible to a worldwide audience. The digitalization project aims to create a comprehensive online repository, ensuring that readers and researchers globally can explore his contributions to Punjabi literature. Additionally, GNDU will develop a dedicated website under its domain, focusing on the life and works of Nanak Singh, to serve as an educational resource.
Navdeep Suri, Secretary of the Nanak Singh Literary Foundation and grandson of the novelist, emphasized the foundation's primary goal of safeguarding Nanak Singh's literary legacy. He highlighted how this digitization effort aligns with broader preservation strategies to honor the author's impact on social and cultural narratives.
Insights from the Memorial Lecture
The event featured a keynote address by noted sociologist Dr. Harvinder Singh Bhatti from Punjabi University, Patiala, who provided a critical analysis of Nanak Singh's novels. Dr. Bhatti described Nanak Singh as not just a storyteller but a keen observer of society, whose works played a pivotal role in strengthening reformist movements and advocating for a shared Punjabi identity and secular social order.
Dr. Bhatti elaborated on how Nanak Singh's writings, influenced by historical events like the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, reflect profound social transformations and critique prevailing social evils. This perspective underscores the novelist's role in popularizing the novel as a literary form in Punjabi, at a time when poetry dominated the literary landscape.
University's Ongoing Efforts
Harinder Kaur Sohal, Coordinator of the Nanak Singh Centre at GNDU, outlined the center's dedication to identifying and compiling writings related to Nanak Singh. During the lecture, a research-based book titled "Nanak Singh Di Galpkari: Khoj-Drishti," edited by Sohal, was released, further contributing to scholarly engagement with his works.
Vice-Chancellor Karamjeet Singh reiterated that Nanak Singh's literary achievements are not only remarkable for their artistic merit but also for their ability to inspire critical thinking, foster understanding, and cultivate social awareness among readers. This digitization initiative is seen as a crucial step in ensuring that future generations can access and learn from his enduring legacy.
The collaboration between GNDU and the Nanak Singh Literary Foundation marks a proactive approach to cultural preservation, leveraging technology to bridge historical literary contributions with modern accessibility needs.
