Punjab Higher Education Department Designates GNDU for Centralized Law Admissions Process
The Punjab Department of Higher Education has officially appointed Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) as the competent authority to oversee and conduct centralized online counseling for admissions to law courses across the state for the upcoming 2026–27 academic session. This strategic move aims to streamline the admission process, ensuring transparency and efficiency for thousands of aspiring law students in Punjab.
Comprehensive Breakdown of Available Law Seats in Punjab
According to Anshu Kataria, President of the Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (PUCA), a total of 7,412 seats are available across various law programs in Punjab for the 2026–27 session. The detailed seat distribution is as follows:
- BA LLB (Hons): 600 seats
- BA LLB: 3,390 seats
- LLB: 2,702 seats
- BCom LLB: 510 seats
- BCom LLB (Hons): 60 seats
- BBA LLB: 150 seats
Within this total, management quota seats account for a specific portion, including 77 in BA LLB (Hons), 437 in BA LLB, 432 in LLB, 65 in BCom LLB, 8 in BCom LLB (Hons), and 19 in BBA LLB. This allocation ensures that both merit-based and management-based admissions are clearly defined, providing a structured framework for the counseling process.
Rising Demand and Admission Trends in Law Education
Kataria highlighted that demand for law courses has been steadily increasing across Punjab. He noted that seats in nearly all law programs were fully occupied during the previous academic year, and a similar trend is anticipated for the current admission cycle. This surge in interest reflects a growing preference for legal education among students in the region.
Furthermore, Kataria pointed out that tighter immigration norms internationally have led more students to opt for professional courses within India. This shift in student preferences could result in seats filling up earlier than usual in the current admission cycle, emphasizing the importance of a well-organized and timely counseling process.
The appointment of GNDU as the central authority is expected to enhance the coordination and fairness of admissions, benefiting both educational institutions and prospective law students. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve higher education standards and accessibility in Punjab.
