IGNOU Expands Educational Reach in Goa with New Quepem Study Centre
In a significant development for higher education access in Goa, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has announced the establishment of its eighth study centre at Government College Quepem. This move comes following the recent formation of the third district, Kushavati, and aims to address the educational needs of students in rural areas with a substantial Scheduled Tribe (ST) population.
Addressing Geographic Barriers for Students
Until now, students from Canacona, Sanguem, and Quepem talukas faced considerable travel challenges to access IGNOU services. They had to journey to the study centre in Margao for general programs, and for arts programs, they needed to travel as far as the Panaji study centre for guidance. The absence of a local study centre in this rural region created significant obstacles for aspiring learners.
Goa regional centre director G Shrinivas confirmed that the new study centre at Quepem college will become operational by the July admission session. "It will provide students from the new district weekend counselling on their academic programmes, admission assistance and take submission of assignments. Students will also be able to do their practicals," Shrinivas stated.
Operational Details and Admission Process
Shrinivas explained that IGNOU, which is the only open university established by an act of Parliament, conducts two admission sessions annually: the first in January and the second in July. He noted that the admission period for the January session has been extended, allowing students to seek admissions until February 28.
"Admissions are to be carried out online by all students through the Samarth portal," Shrinivas emphasized. "Once the study centre becomes operational at the Quepem college, the students will be able to get guidance on which course is best suited for them as per their education, ability and interest."
Growing Demand for Flexible Education Options
The director revealed that across Goa, approximately 5,000 to 6,000 new students register for IGNOU programs each year. Students primarily turn to IGNOU for postgraduate programs due to the limited availability of full-time PG seats in traditional institutions.
IGNOU programs are particularly valued for their flexibility, allowing students to pursue higher education while simultaneously entering the workforce. This dual advantage makes IGNOU an attractive option for many learners who need to balance educational aspirations with employment responsibilities.
The establishment of the Quepem study centre represents a strategic expansion of educational infrastructure in Goa, particularly benefiting rural communities that previously lacked convenient access to higher education resources. This development aligns with broader efforts to democratize education and provide learning opportunities to underserved populations across the region.
