The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) is poised for significant expansion, as it prepares to acquire a 21,707-square-metre (5.4-acre) land parcel in Vastrapur from the Ahmedabad Education Society (AES). The AES, a registered trust, owns an open plot measuring 26,707 square metres in Vastrapur (plot no 18 in TP scheme 31). The trust has applied to sell 21,707 square metres of this land to IIM-Ahmedabad for Rs 378 crore.
Public Notice and Objections
A public notice issued by the charity commissioner office has invited objections regarding the sale of the land, which is located opposite the new IIM-A campus, adjacent to the Blind People’s Association (BPA). An email sent to IIM-A officials seeking details on the acquisition and future plans did not receive a response until Monday evening. However, sources indicate that the land is being acquired to expand the B-school’s campus.
Reasons for Expansion
Sources attribute the expansion to growing student numbers and the introduction of new programmes. The flagship PGP programme has grown from 255 students in 2006 to 408 in 2025, marking a 60% increase. Similarly, the PGP-X programme expanded from 90 to 158 seats during the same period. While the intake for PGP-FABM has remained largely unchanged, several new programmes have been launched in both residential and hybrid modes, including a blended PGP in business analytics and AI introduced last year. An industry observer noted, “There is a growing need for accommodating students and staff as majority courses are residential.”
Past Infrastructure Developments
IIM-A’s ‘new campus’ across the 132-feet ring road became operational in 2009. In recent years, the institute has undertaken major infrastructure projects, such as the construction of the JSW School of Public Policy, a new academic block, and a new building for IIMA Ventures. The land used for these projects previously hosted the Sattvik food festival and other activities.
Future Plans
The proposed land parcel, located opposite the new campus, is expected to facilitate the expansion of the institute’s footprint with academic and residential buildings. Campus expansion has also been discussed as part of planning for alternate student residences during proposed repairs and renovation of the heritage campus designed by iconic architect Louis Kahn.
