IIM Nagpur Embraces AI for Accelerated Academic Evaluation
The Indian Institute of Management-Nagpur (IIM-Nagpur) is embarking on a transformative initiative to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its academic assessment processes. According to director Bhimaraya Metri, the institute aims to deploy AI for the swift evaluation of students' answer sheets and project work, significantly cutting down the time required for manual grading.
Revolutionizing Assessment Timelines
Metri emphasized that while the primary goal is to reduce time lag, AI will not replace teachers. Currently, manual assessment takes approximately two weeks, but with AI tools, this duration could be slashed to just one or two days. This efficiency boost will allow faculty to focus more on interactive teaching and mentorship.
In addition to grading, AI will be utilized for setting question papers, with prompts determining the difficulty level. This approach ensures consistency and adaptability in exam design, catering to diverse learning outcomes.
Balancing AI with Human Expertise
Metri clarified that AI cannot replace humans but should be optimally used to nurture innovative thinking, a crucial trait for future business leaders. The institute is holding meetings to explore methods, including obtaining licenses for specific AI tools, with a decision expected soon.
To enable AI assessment, students will transition from manually written answers to online submissions. The AI tool will scan for key lines in answer codes to make initial assessments. However, Metri noted that answers might sometimes surpass AI's evaluation, necessitating human intervention. After AI processing, papers will undergo examiner review to ensure accuracy and address any gaps.
Empowering Students and Faculty with AI Tools
IIM Nagpur plans to provide access to AI tools for both students and faculty. In the coming days, students may use these tools for project development, though Metri warned against copy-paste exercises. Faculty will be equipped with advanced AI to explore countermeasures, fostering creativity and critical thinking among students.
Furthermore, students' ability to use AI effectively may become an assessment criterion. Metri highlighted that generating the right answers depends on asking the right questions, making AI proficiency a valuable skill in modern education.
Strategic Implementation and Future Outlook
The institute's multi-level AI integration strategy underscores its commitment to leveraging technology while preserving human oversight. By combining AI efficiency with expert evaluation, IIM Nagpur aims to enhance academic rigor and prepare students for leadership roles in an AI-driven world.
This initiative reflects a broader trend in educational innovation, where institutions harness AI to streamline processes without compromising quality. As IIM Nagpur moves forward, its approach could set a benchmark for other management institutes in India and beyond.
