IIT Kanpur Commences PMKVY 4.0 Assistant Machinist Training Program
Kanpur: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has officially launched the PMKVY 4.0 skilling program focused on 'Assistant Machinist – Iron and Steel' at its state-of-the-art Imagineering Laboratory. This initiative represents a significant step in large-scale skill development at the premier institute, aligning with the broader vision for Viksit Bharat by fostering a skilled workforce for advanced manufacturing industries.
Program Structure and Participation
The training program is designed as an extensive 420-hour course, spanning 70 days with six hours of daily instruction. In the initial phase, 40 candidates from Kanpur have enrolled in the Assistant Machinist – Iron and Steel course. The institute plans to train approximately 360 students in phases, ensuring comprehensive skill development.
Key collaborators include the 4-i Lab, Central Workshop, and Tinkering Laboratory, which are actively participating to provide hands-on experience. The program is being conducted under the guidance of IIT Kanpur director, Prof Manindra Agrawal, and dean of research and development, Tarun Gupta. Coordination is led by Bishakh Bhattacharya and Dr Amandeep Singh Oberoi, who oversee the academic and technical execution.
Training Focus and Industry Relevance
Students will receive cutting-edge training and practical exposure to technologies related to precision manufacturing systems. The curriculum covers:
- Additive and subtractive machining techniques
- Traditional and advanced metal-cutting processes
- Hands-on applications in robotics and automation
This ensures that trainees gain industry-relevant skills and practical experience, preparing them for roles in next-generation manufacturing and automation sectors.

The skill development courses will be conducted in multiple phases, including:
