IIT Kharagpur Student Dies in Tragic Fall, Eighth Campus Fatality in 15 Months
A third-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur died on Saturday after reportedly falling from the eighth-floor terrace of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hall of Residence. Preliminary police findings indicate the incident may be a suicide, casting a shadow over the prestigious institution.
Details of the Incident and Victim Profile
The victim, identified as Jayveersinh Dodiya, aged 21, was a resident of Nehru Hall of Residence from Ahmedabad. He was pursuing a five-year dual-degree course (BTech and MTech) in manufacturing science and engineering within the mechanical engineering department. His death occurred as end-semester exams commenced on Saturday, with Dodiya scheduled to take an exam on Sunday.
According to reports, Dodiya studied with friends until early Saturday morning. Around 9:15 am, staff members heard a loud thud and discovered him lying unconscious with severe injuries in front of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee hostel. He was rushed to the Emergency at BC Roy Technology Hospital, where he was declared deceased upon examination. The institute has informed his family.
Police Investigation and Campus Response
Police stated that preliminary findings suggest Dodiya died by suicide, but a formal statement will be issued after an autopsy at Midnapore Medical College Hospital on Sunday and the arrival of his family. Authorities are examining CCTV footage to determine his movements, noting he entered Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hall between 8:45 am and 9:00 am. They are also investigating how he accessed the terrace, which is typically kept shut but might have been opened for maintenance work.
An officer mentioned that call records will be checked, and Dodiya's glasses and clothes have been seized as part of the inquiry. This incident marks the eighth student death on the Kharagpur campus in the past 15 months, raising concerns about student welfare.
Academic and Personal Background
Dodiya was described as a student with a strong academic record, holding an overall CGPA of around 7.7, which improved to approximately 8 in the last semester. He had no backlogs and was involved in the institute's Business Club. As a dual-degree student, he did not face immediate stress regarding internships or placements, according to campus insiders. The institute has also reduced academic load by implementing 30-mark papers for two-hour exams.
Dean of Student Well-being Arun Chakraborty expressed devastation, noting that Dodiya had no record of visiting the counselling centre or seeking help from mental health experts on campus. Friends reported studying with him late into the night and were unaware when he left the hostel.
Mental Health Initiatives at IIT Kharagpur
In response to ongoing concerns, IIT Kharagpur has implemented several measures to support student mental health, including:
- An AI-driven mental wellness initiative called SETU.
- Creation of the post of dean of student well-being.
- Restructuring of the counselling centre.
- Formation of a students' task force at hostels.
- Stress management workshops and recruitment of mental health experts as wellness buddies at hostels during nights.
- Introduction of life skills and joy and success courses.
Despite these efforts, the campus is enveloped in sorrow as students and faculty grapple with this sudden loss, highlighting the persistent challenges in addressing mental health issues in academic environments.
